10/05/14 - Samantha Jade being interviewed for the website "AdelaideNow.com.au"

Samantha Jade says her mum’s battle with cancer has moved her music to a deeper place

Samantha Jade says basing herself back home in Perth to spend time with her cancer-stricken mum has changed her music.

The 27-year-old pop star and "INXS: Never Tear Us Apart" actor, whose mother Jacquie Gibbs is battling cancer, is recording her upcoming album in Perth while playing “part-time nurse”.

She is also trying to squeeze in time to jet back and forth to the eastern states to promote her latest single "Up!", which is the official Socceroos song for the World Cup. She said that since finding out about her mum’s illness in february she had connected with her music more deeply:

“There’s a place i can connect to now that i never could before, just in a different way”, Jade said.

She said that despite her mum being bound to a hospital bed she still makes her happiness a priority, insisting she continues doing what she loves – recording and working:

“The first two weeks we found out, she was unwell and it was so intense, that i just literally cancelled everything because i just couldn’t”, Jade says, “She (mum) was like: "I need you to work and i need you to do your music because that’s what you love and you’ve worked so hard for it and i want you to do it". She was just so sweet – i mean, God, in this time, everytime i see her she’s like: "Are you drinking your water, and are you eating enough?", i’m like: "Mum, what about you? Are you ok?"

But Jade, who won "The X Factor Australia" in 2012, has made family her focus:

“I’m balancing it out and i do what i need to do”, she said, “I’m not doing every gig under the sun like i used to do because i need to be home right now, but i still am doing my job. I just want to finish the album – i don’t want my fans to have to wait any longer.”
