11/08/14 - Samantha Jade being interviewed for the website "PerthNow.com.au"
After taking several weeks off following her mother’s death from cancer, pop singer Samantha Jade is in the studio to get her next album finished in her memory.
And she says her mother, Jacqui Gibbs, will be with her in spirit when she plays her next big gig, headlining the "Nova's Red Room Global Tour" in the "Qantas'" business lounge at Los Angeles airport next month.
In her first interview since her mother died, Jade says she is trying hard to cope with her grief.
“It has been a tough time. I don’t know if it has really hit me. I am going through the motions”, said Jade of her struggle with grief after losing her best friend and mum, "I can still feel her around and i still talk to her. I made a promise to mum that i would finish this record no matter what. To be honest, part of me wants to sit in a room and cry all day, but i can’t. I’ve got to get on with things for her.”
Jade, 27, travelled from the family home in Perth to the US and Europe with her father and brothers following the tragedy:
“My family and i wanted to go on the trip to make sure that we did that for her. We went to Paris, which was her dream. We went to London and we went to New York and we just had the best time. We were away from Australia where all the memories are so it was nice to take that time.”
Now Jade is taking tentative steps back into the industry. She has agreed to be one of the headliners on a spectacular global initiative, the "Nova's Red Room Global Tour". She’ll travel with competition winners to Los Angeles, where she will perform on that leg of a US tour, which will also take in New York and Las Vegas and performances from Usher and G.R.L:
“I used to enter these competitions, but i never won them”, she laughed, “I think that by then i will have the new single worked out and i’m hoping it will be a kind of debut. Fingers crossed for that.”
But before she goes, it’s head down as she writes and records for her new album, something she and her mother spent a lot of time discussing:
“I am just trying to take anything positive out of it like my mum did”, she explained, “When mum was diagnosed, instead of sitting there and thinking the world was against her she was like: "This is the cards i’ve been dealt, how do i make the best out of the situation?". She was just unbelievable and so it would be so ridiculous if i went to a dark place because she didn’t do that. I owe it to her to be as positive as i can.”
Jade isn’t ready to reveal the album title but said she and her mum came up with it together:
“Mum gave me so many ideas, so her stamp is really going to be a part of this record, even down to photos and outfits that she helped me choose and colour schemes”, Jade explained, “We had so much time because she was in hospital for six months and couldn’t walk anymore, so she was literally in a bed. She listened to all the songs, so she is very much going to be a huge part of this album.”
